Sailor, 71, rescued in ocean drama

A 71-year-old solo sailor said he was lucky to be alive after a freak wave flung him off his small yacht in the Atlantic Ocean.

Gerry Beard, of Shieldaig, Torridon, was washed off the rolling boat as 30-foot high seas crashed over the deck of the Meris.

The petrified sailor desperately grabbed onto a piece of rigging.

The next wave pushed the boat underneath him and he landed on the deck.
