ALEX Salmond has thrown his weight behind the winning design for the proposed revamp of Aberdeen's Union Terrace Gardens.

But the First Minister said it was up to city residents to decide if the controversial project goes ahead.

Mr Salmond said he was "very impressed" with the Granite Web, a complex construction of three dimensional pathways towering over sections of green parkland.

The Diller Scofidio and Renfro/Keppie Design entry was selected for the City Garden Project by a judging panel.

Members of the public are now being asked if they support the £140 million project.

Some groups want to retain the Victorian gardens and fear construction costs will spiral out of control.

But business leaders believe the development plans will attract new investment to the city.
