School closures fight

DOZENS of parents and children have joined a protest over plans to close primary schools in one of Scotland's best education authorities.

East Dunbartonshire Council has proposed axeing up to one-third of its 36 primaries, prompting anger from the local community. The authority, which is regularly near the top of exam league tables, claims the closures and mergers would create "super schools" with better facilities. An informal consultation is currently under way.
