A NEW School of Engineering is to be established in Glasgow to ensure there is no skills shortage to fill renewables opportunities in the future.

A partnership between the city council and energy companies will see secondary school pupils with an aptitude for science given greater support to pursue a career in engineering.

Energy firms have warned the council there is a risk of Glasgow not being in a position to fill the jobs the renewables sector will bring and a need to ensure replacements for a grow- ing number of engineers due to retire in the near future.

Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said the plan will help secure the city's position as a leader in renewable technology.

The engineering scholarships will be delivered from one or more of Glasgow Secondary schools but will not involve a new facility being built.

A partnership between colleges, employers and the council will also see an annual Green Jobs Fair set up to advise pupils in S1-S3 about a career in green technologies and help them plan their studies.

Mr Matheson is speaking at the Base Glasgow low- carbon and built environment and infrastructure conference today, where he will unveil the proposals.
