Scot who lit up the world dies aged 54

A SCOTS architect and lighting engineer who is responsible for some of the world's most amazing lighting effects has died of cancer, aged 54.

Edinburgh-based Jonathan Speirs was told he had terminal cancer in late 2010 but he continued to work as director of London design firm Speirs & Major until the end of last year.

In October 2010, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS).

A member of the RIAS and former student of Aberdeen's Scott Sutherland School of Architecture, he was only the fifth recipient of the prestigious award.

The list of iconic structures worldwide whose night-time appearance has been influenced by Mr Speirs includes the Millennium Dome in London, Madrid's Barajas Airport, the luxury Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, Gateshead's Millennium Bridge and the Gherkin in London.
