The number of service personnel based in Scotland has fallen by 7.5% in the past year, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Last year 12,090 military personnel were based in Scotland, dropping to 11,190 this year, the MoD said.

It was the biggest fall of any of the four UK nations, with England reduced by 2.5%, Wales by 1.5% and Northern Ireland by 6.8%.

A downward trend of MoD personnel based in Scotland has continued, falling from 24,680 in 2000 to 15,880, a drop of 35%.

The Scottish Government said the country has been disproportionately affected by cuts, with the UK as a whole seeing a 20% drop since 2000.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has written again to Defence Secretary Philip Hammond asking for clarity on defence plans for Scotland.

"These figures make for very worrying reading. Again we are seeing the Ministry of Defence impose drastic and disproportionate cuts to the number of service and civilian MoD personnel in Scotland.

"In July last year the MoD set out the Defence Transformation Programme. Since then the local communities throughout Scotland which host military bases have been faced with prolonged uncertainty."

As part of the defence review, the RAF will be withdrawn from Leuchars and army units will move to RAF Kinloss following the departure of the air force.

Ms Sturgeon said: "Since July last year, we have been urging the UK Government to provide the clarity our communities need. I have written again to Philip Hammond urging him to stand by the MoD's commitment to confirm the defence basing and personnel footprint as soon as possible."
