SCOTS firefighter Stevie McCrorie has been crowned champion of BBC singing contest, The Voice.

The budding star, coached by Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson, beat competition from Lucy O'Byrne in the grand final of the primetime show.

His debut single, which went on sale at midnight, is a cover of Lost Stars, which was originally by Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine.

After his victory was announced, the stunned 29-year-old, from Alva in Clackmannanshire, said: "I never thought this was possible."

He added: "I'm so lost for words right now. I can't thank everyone enough for doing this for me.

"After tonight it's down to business. Obviously the single is going to be out at midnight tonight and everyone that has voted for me, just go and buy that single."

The fireman, who has a young daughter, had been the favourite to win with odds of 4/6.

McCrorie impressed the four judges - Will.i.am, Sir Tom Jones, Ricky Wilson and Rita Ora - on the show's first Blind Audition and was the only one of the four finalists who persuaded all four to turn their chairs around to face him.

Last night's final also featured performances from contestants Sasha Simone and Emmanuel Nwamadi, but the ultimate sing-off came down to a competition between McCrorie and O'Byrne.
