Peter Doherty, 68, of Dumbarton, was sitting in a bus stop in Orlando when a Ford Focus veered off the road into the shelter.
His wife, Isobel, suffered broken ribs and bruising.
It has been reported the car may have been racing with another vehicle before the crash, with police investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
