The search for a missing sea angler has been called off until later today.

No trace has yet been found of the man who disappeared while night fishing from rocks on the Aberdeenshire coast at Tangle-Ha, north of St Cyrus.

Coastguard teams have been scouring the shoreline since he was reported missing by another angler at about 3am this morning.

The Rescue Bond 1 helicopter and Montrose lifeboat were assisting with the operation.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: "We have completed our search and nothing has been found."

The search will resume later this evening at low water, he said.

Conditions were earlier described as "exceedingly rough".

Kevin Brown, watch manager at Aberdeen coastguard, said the wind was gusting force 4 (13-17mph) and teams had to contend with a large sea swell of two to three metres.

"We'd always recommend that anglers check weather and tides before setting out and make sure they wear suitable clothing and a life jacket," he said.

"If you get into difficulty, or spot someone else in trouble, call 999 straight away and ask for the Coastguard."
