Seven churches to share £1.3m grant for repairs

SEVEN Scottish churches are to undergo repairs and refurbishment after securing £1.3 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland.

Among those selected to receive a share of the cash are the first openly Catholic church to be built after the Reformation and a building regarded as one of the best examples of a Modernist-style church in Scotland.

The cash has been awarded under the Repair Grants for Places of Worship scheme. Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, said: "Places of worship are such a key component of our rich cultural and architectural heritage across Scotland. "It is important we invest in their conservation and upkeep to ensure they continue to play a vital role for the congregations they serve and communities in which they are based. I am delighted that Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund are making this funding available for these projects which will breathe new life into these churches through essential repairs and maintenance."I look forward to seeing the results this investment will deliver."Churches receiving grants include Govan & Linthouse Parish Church, in Glasgow, St Andrew's Episcopal Church, Ardrossan, St Margaret's Parish Church, Dalry, Trinity & Alvah Church, Banff, and The Friary, Dundee.The 18th century St Gregory's Church, near Buckie in Banffshire, was given £92,000 to strengthen its roof. It was the first Catholic place of worship to be built in Scotland after the Reformation which did not attempt to disguise that it was a church in an attempt to avoid persecution.Also benefiting from a grant is Brucefield Church in Whitburn, West Lothian, an A-listed building constructed in the modernist architectural style. Colin McLean, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: "We are delighted to be able to help these congregations secure the future of their church. "Scotland has an amazing variety of churches, each one reflecting the social history of its community as well as the architectural influences of the time."
