A YOUNG boy has died after being struck by a car.

The seven-year-old was hit by what police described as a "Jeep-type vehicle" in Dick Terrace, Penicuik, Midlothian, yesterday afternoon.

One of the boy's relatives said in an online forum that family members were "traumatised" by the death while raising concern about local speculation over what happened.

Lothian and Borders Police appealed for witnesses and said the driver of the vehicle was helping them with inquiries.

Locals paid tribute on an online forum and some suggested organising a petition to have speed bumps installed in an attempt to cut car speeds.

One friend of the family, Catherine Craig, said: "I know the family and my heart is breaking thinking what they are now going through."

Gail Hamilton added: "That road should be a 20 [mph] with proper speed bumps."

Other residents echoed family concerns about the speculation over how the tragedy happened.

David Eaton said: "So sad people are jumping to conclusion - This should be time for sympathy and support."

l Two people were taken to hospital after a head-on collision at the junction of A68 and A6093 near Dalkeith, Midlothian. A woman, 48, was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with neck, chest and leg injuries. A 29-year-old man was also hurt.
