The food offered by a remote bakery on Shetland 100 years ago was basic by today's standards.

The shop at Busta Voe, offered Royal Navy squadrons bunkered there only white unsliced bread and ship biscuits in 1915.

However, the shop proved hugely popular with the seamen during the First World War. This weekend, Voe Bakery celebrates its key role in supporting the blockade of Germany, as it turns 100.

Festivities including live music will take place followed by a wreah laying tomorrow and a service in theVoe Kirk to remember Great War victims.

Tracey Thompson, Voe Bakery Office Manager, said the community was proud of the shop, adding: "Our range has expanded a great deal from white sliced bread and ship biscuits but there can't be many places in the UK still doing the same thing as a hundred years ago and still taste so good!"

Mike Cantlay, the chairman of VisitScotland, said: "We wish the bakery a very happy birthday and look forward to another century of delicious bread and banter!"
