Shipbuilder buoyant after return to profit

THE last independent shipbuilder on the Clyde, Ferguson Marine, returned to profit in the year to May, as turnover more than doubled.

It registered a pre-tax profit of £493,000 in the year to May 31 as it constructs two hybrid ferries for the owner of Caledonian MacBrayne's fleet. It is a strong turnaround from a £1.58 million loss in the prior 12 months, a period in which a hole had been left in its order book by the collapse of key renewable energy sector customer Subocean.
