The revelation by the 229-year-old Royal Society of Edinburgh comes just 48 hours after Prime Minister David Cameron announced that Whitehall's Forfeiture Committee is to examine whether to revoke Sir Fred's knighthood.
The Royal Society bestowed its honour on Sir Fred in 2008, the year after RBS controversially took over the Dutch bank ABN Amro as the banking crisis hit.
