JAZZ trumpeter Hugh Masekela will join fellow musicians from South Africa and Scotland to celebrate the first International Mandela Day commemorating the former leader.
A day of events will be held on July 18 to mark Glasgow's relationship with Nelson Mandela, who died in December last year. Glasgow was the first city in the world to honour Mandela with the Freedom of the City, in 1981, and he addressed a crowd in the city after receiving his accolade 12 years later.
Masekela will play alongside a cappella singers Complete and the Mzansi Youth Choir at a concert at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
Also taking the stage will be political folk singer Arthur Johnstone, who played at Mandela's Freedom of Glasgow Ceremony in 1993, Siobhan Miller and Aaron Jones.
Svend Brown, director of music at Glasgow Life, said Mandela had moved those in Glasgow with his gravity, humility, passion and vision. He added: "He also showed us that even the greatest of men can join in the universal celebration of music as he danced on stage.
"We are thrilled to honour him in Glasgow by bringing together musicians from Scotland and South Africa, from the great legend Hugh Masekela to the voices of the youth and the future, Mzansi Youth Choir. We deeply hope he would have loved this."
