ANDY Murray's victory divided opinion over whether the Scot, cyclist Bradley Wiggins or athlete Mo Farah should be crowned Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY).

Sports fans took to social networking sites to voice their opinion, with Murray and Wiggins being the most common suggestions.

Tour de France winner and Olympic gold medalist Wiggins is the bookmakers' favourite, with Murray not far behind.

However, others suggested runner Farah, who won two golds at London 2012 in the 1000 metres and 5000 metres, could secure the top spot at the BBC awards show on December 16.

Questions were also raised over whether there should be a separate Olympic Sports Personality award. However, a spokesman for the BBC refused to confirm or deny this was being considered.

Former footballer Robbie Savage posted on Twitter: "Congratulations Andy Murray gotta be SPOTY now surely."

While Joshua Chapman wrote: "If it isn't Bradley Wiggins then there's a conspiracy going on."

Another added: "Anyone who thinks Andy Murray should win SPOTY is deluded, absolutely deluded."

TV presenter Piers Morgan also wrote: "So many candidates for BBC SPOTY now – but the smart money will go on Mo Farah."

Cyclist Mark Cavendish claimed the award was going to be a difficult one to decide.

He said: "The fact that there has been so much great sporting success in the country, it's going to be a tough one to call."

Others questioned whether or not there should be a separate award for Olympians this year.

Martin Stolliday wrote on Twitter: "Will the BBC hive Olympians away from other sportspeeps at this year's SPOTY? Or will Murray just win outright for Olympic gold and US Open?"

However, a spokesman for the BBC said: "Everything is still up for decision. We'll be announcing our plans towards the end of this month."
