Newarthill-born design star Christopher Kane has been nominated for the Designer of the Year award, sponsored by Vogue.com, alongside other talented hopefuls such as Jonathan Saunders and Graeme Black, who has dressed Sarah Brown, the Prime Minister’s wife, on several occasions.
The Young Designer of the Year category, sponsored by Glasgow: Scotland with Style, includes up-and-coming designers such as Holly Fulton, who recently won an emerging talent award at the British Fashion Awards, and Henrietta Ludgate, who exhibited at the ethical London Fashion Week exhibition, Estethica, this year.
Other categories include Textile Brand of the Year, which is sponsored by The Herald. Nominees for the category include Angela Cassidy, DS Dundee, Lyle & Scott, Roam, and Begg Scotland.
Scottish designer emporium Cruise is nominated in the Retailer of the Year category, while milliner William Chambers and bodywear label Bebaroque will fight it out for the Accessory Designer of the Year title.
Tessa Hartmann, founder of the event, said: “Over the past five years the Scottish Fashion Awards have acted as the most authoritative and credible benchmark of Scotland’s fashion success stories. We have provided an unrivalled visual platform to recognise and honour these innovators and this 2010 nominee list is probably our most significant to date.
“This year’s nominees continue to excite and delight us as we provide international recognition of their craftsmanship.
“As we debate hemlines, silhouettes and colour palettes, we rest in the knowledge and smile with pride that this nation of ours has provided yet another inspirational list of creators to take us further into the 21st century.
“After we breathe, eat and sleep we clothe our bodies, making the Scottish Fashion Awards, and indeed fashion itself, a pretty important indicator of our time. We will celebrate this fifth anniversary in grand style and provide a showcase of talent and entertainment that will make history in Scotland’s fashion template.
“I am indebted to all our amazing sponsors whose continued belief and support of this event has allowed us to mature with grace and style.”
The Scottish Fashion Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 20, in Glasgow Science Centre and Imax cinema.
Guests will be treated to a champagne reception before the awards ceremony in the Imax theatre. There will also be a Swarovski catwalk show as well as a gala dinner in the Science Centre for invited guests.
Swarovski creative director Nathalie Colin, who is also a judge at the event, said: “I am thrilled to take part, for the second time, as an official judge for the Scottish Fashion Awards. Celebrating the fifth anniversary of this prestigious event, I am convinced the awards will carry a special frisson of excitement.
“I look forward to discovering the new fashion signature of tomorrow and celebrating the confirmed Scottish talents who shape an active and inspiring fashion scene.
“Swarovski has always been supportive of emerging talent in creative fields and continuously highlights the world of fashion with its sparkling appeal. Therefore, joining the jury as creative director of Swarovski is a real honour for me and a responsibility I am delighted to fulfil. I look forward to being impressed once again by the immense creative talent at the event this June.”
Fellow judge Dolly Jones, editor of Vogue.com, said: “The mix in the Designer Of The Year category is very good. With names such as Christopher Kane in there, who is an undeniable talent, and Pam Hogg, who has such a different story to tell with her fashion label coming back again in the past few years, it’s looking like a really strong category.”
