PEOPLE using Edinburgh's streets and parks will have super-fast wi-fi for their smart phones and laptops within three years.

City of Edinburgh Council announced last night it plans to bring high speed broadband to 90% of the city's residents and businesses within three years.

Funding for the Connected Capital proposal, which was submitted to the UK Government yesterday, was announced in March as part of the £100 million of urban broadband funding set up by Westminster's Super-Connected Cities Initiative.

Edinburgh is in line to receive between £8m and £11m for the project, while the city's council has pledged £1.9m of revenue.

Councillor Alasdair Rankin, Convener of the Finance and Resources Committee, said: "This funding will greatly enhance our offering as a digitally inclusive city."
