Swedes can spread the warmth

SWEDEN operates a heating system known as "district heating" in Stockholm – where warmth is generated at a central point and distributed outwards.

Heat is carried along a network of underground pipes in the form of hot water or steam.

During the last 15 years the system has been adapted to also heat up the streets.

Warm coils of metal under the ground are kept hot during the winter and despite the considerable snowfall in the Scandinavian country, pavements remain ice and snow-free.
