SHE won the hearts of a nation with her celebratory smile after racing to a medal position in the Commonwealth Games pool.

Now Erraid Davies, the youngest member of Team Scotland at Glasgow 2014 when she competed in the summer at the age of 13, has been shortlisted for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award.

The para-athlete, who travels an hour-and-a-half six days a week to train in a 16.75m pool in Shetland, won third place in the para-sport 100m breastroke in July. Afterwards, she said she was "just really happy" to have taken a place on the podium.

Scottish Swimming yesterday congratulated Erraid on her nomination, tweeting: "Way to go Erraid, we are all rooting for you."

She has been nominated alongside fellow Scot Bradley Neil, who enjoyed the best season of his career on the golf course. The 18-year-old, from Blairgowrie, won the British Amateur Championship in June, the youngest-ever Scotsman to do so and the first for 10 years.

The pair face competition from eight other athletes who have all been recognised for their achievements in the past 12 months, with several big names from this summer's Games included in the shortlist.

They include diver Alicia Blagg, gymnast Claudia Fragapane, wheelchair racer Jade Jones and gymnast Nile Wilson. The other nominees are canoeist Rebeka Simon, para-cyclist Sophie Thornhill, weightlifter Rebekah Tiler and athlete Morgan Lake.

Blagg, 17, won gold in the pool, while 16-year-old Fragapane became the first Englishwoman to win four golds at a single Commonwealth Games for 84 years. She took gold in the all-around vault, floor and team event.

The winner, whose name will be revealed on Blue Peter on December 11, will follow in the footsteps of stars such as Andy Murray, Ellie Simmonds and Wayne Rooney.

They will be invited to collect their prize at the BBC ceremony hosted by Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Sunday, December 14.
