Tate galleries boss Sir Nicholas Serota has been named as the most powerful person in the art world.

Sir Nicholas, who topped the Art Review's Power 100, has been the Tate's director since 1988 and oversaw the opening of Tate Modern.

The gallery, on London's South Bank, is the most visited contemporary art museum in the world with the magazine saying Sir Nicholas had helped the Tate "punch above its weight in the global network of influence".

The artist Marina Abramovic who earlier this year spent 64 days in the gallery simply interacting with the public also appeared in the top 10 list.

Hundreds of people queued to spend time with her, some leaving in tears after the experience.
