Glasgow has won a £24 million competition called the Future Cities Demonstrator – including testing technology that raises the alarm when someone is about to jump off a bridge.

The CCTV to prevent suicides is among a range of ideas to be developed as part of the initiative to make the city smarter and safer.

Another plan is to use a mobile phone to find the quickest route to the city centre as you start your car.

Another will reveal the hospital A&E unit with the shortest waiting time at the touch of a button.

The city beat 29 others to win the Future Cities Demonstrator, which is run by the Technology Strategy Board.

The programme will result in the creation of a new technology operations hub at the east end headquarters of Glasgow Community & Safety Services.

Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson said: "As a society, we are generating more data than at any time in history. By harnessing that knowledge we can improve the lives of residents, the environment and the economy."
