A TEENAGER has been charged over allegations a young East Stirlingshire footballer was racially abused during a league two game.

Full-back Jordan Tapping, 17, was substituted in tears after suffering "extreme distress" caused by alleged comments during the clubs 4-0 defeat at Peterhead on Saturday.

Both the club, police and the Scottish Premier Football League [SPFL] launched investigations into the alleged incident and witnesses were interviewed.

Police Scotland said yesterday a 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with the incident at the match.

He is expected to appear at Peterhead Sheriff Court tomorrow.

Police Scotland Inspector Andy Imray said: "We would like to thank both Peterhead and East Stirling for their co-operation."

Tapping, of Larbert, is described by his club as being a talented young prospect in his first season with the side.

Fellow players complained to the referee about the comments and his report on the incident has also been delivered to the SPFL, which is investigating.

Tapping's family have thanked people who have been in touch with messages of support.

Peterhead has a strong anti-racism policy in place.
