A teenager has died after the motorcycle he was travelling on crashed with a car.

The 19-year-old man was a pillion passenger on an off-road bike when the incident occurred in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire, yesterday evening.

The motorcycle was being ridden by a 17-year-old man when it collided with a Honda Civic at around 6.35pm, Police Scotland said.

The passenger struck the road and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened in the area of Craigbank Street near the junction with Robert Smillie Crescent.

The rider was taken to Wishaw General Hospital and treated for a serious hand injury.

The 37-year-old male car driver was not injured but has been left "very upset" by what happened, police said.

Officers based at Motherwell are appealing for information about the incident. Sergeant Alison McAuley from the divisional road policing unit is asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact her on 01698 483045.
