PUPILS from Islay were joined by their head teacher and conductor in celebrating two wins at the Royal National Mod.

Maureen MacDonald was delighted after her pupils from Port Ellen Primary School Choir clinched the Badenoch and Strathspey Area Committee Trophy and the Susan Paterson Caledonian MacBrayne trophy for primary school choirs yesterday at the annual event which is being held in Paisley.

The latter, presented by Ms Paterson's partner Iain Martin, is a new tribute to CalMac's former marketing manager who died last year.

CalMac managing director Martin Dorchester said: "Susan was at the forefront of CalMac's presence at the Royal National Mod for many years and a well-known face for organisers and competitors alike."

Meanwhile, the statutory Gaelic development body Bord na Gaidhlig has announced a new Gaelic education resource for parents interested in their children being taught in the language.
