Homes and businesses in Glasgow were left without water for hours today due to a problem in the network.

Scottish Water have advised that customers in some parts of Glasgow may experience a temporary loss of normal water supplies, low water pressure and discoloured water as a result of an issue in the water network.

It is thought thousands of properties in areas including Milngavie, Bearsden, Maryhill, Shettleston and parts of the South Side, have been affected by the problem, which was identified at around 3.30pm today.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: "We think there is some kind of problem with the network and we are working to identify it and return water supply back to normal.

"Engineers are working to restore normal supplies as quickly as possible but some customers in areas such as Bearsden, Milngavie, Maryhill, Shettleston, the south side of the city and Rutherglen could be affected.

"When normal supplies are restored will depend on where the affected properties are located on our network.

"It is possible that affected customers might experience discoloured when the system is recharged. If they do, affected customers should run the cold water tap in their kitchen until the water runs clear.

"We apologise for any inconvenience and thank affected customers for their patience and understanding."

By 7pm, Scottish Water said the problem had been resolved.
