Tickets available for Banks' tribute event

Tickets are still available for one of the opening events of this year's Aye Write!

Glasgow book festival, a tribute to the late Iain Banks.

The event at the festival, for which The Herald is media partner, will hear yet-to-be-published poems by the fiction and science fiction writer, and memories of the late author from literary friends Ken Macleod and Ron Butlin.

Mr Banks was a regular at Aye Write! and his last public performance was at the Mitchell Library, Glasgow during Book Week Scotland in March 2012.

Mr Macleod - friends with Mr Banks since their school days - said he is looking forward reminiscing about him at the event on Friday.

He said: "The event will certainly be a fitting tribute to Iain as he had a strong connection with Aye Write!.

"He appeared at the festival several times and always enjoyed it. Iain and I were on the same event in the past and it was always memorable.

"The audience can expect a great night reminiscing about Iain and some reflection on his work. We will also be sharing some extracts from some of his poems with the audience."

Karen Cunningham, Aye Write! director and head of Glasgow Libraries, said: "At the Celebrating Iain Banks event we will be celebrating all aspects of Iain's writing and character."
