OSCAR winner Tilda Swinton has made her debut as the latest face of Chanel in a new campaign celebrating Scottish style.

The 52-year-old actress, who lives in Nairn, is fronting the brand's pre-autumn advertising campaign for the Metiers d'Art Paris-Edimbourg collection, by Karl Lagerfeld, the fashion house's chief designer.

The London-born daughter of a Scots father and Australian mother was chosen by Chanel for her "unique personality, charisma and allure".

"Tilda perfectly embodies the Paris-Edimbourg collection," said Lagerfeld. "She is of course Scottish, but more than that she is a modern woman, a timeless icon of elegance."

Chanel's Metier d'Arts annual fashion show, which pays homage to a country that influenced Coco Chanel, was hosted at Linlithgow Palace in December. The Paris-Edimbourg show was a celebration of a very Scottish style and made repeated reference to Mary Queen of Scots, who was born in the palace.

Chanel last year bought a Borders cashmere mill, Barrie Knitwear in Hawick, after its owner went into administration. The knitwear mill had produced cashmere for the French house for 25 years.
