OH deer.

A reindeer on loan as a festive attraction to a mountain forest has been on the run for six days after bolting a 6ft fence when he was spooked by a dog.

Borneo was one of two reindeer who travelled south from their home at the Cairngorms Centre to be put on show temporarily at Whinlatter Forest, Cumbria.

The seven-year-old adult male was in his pen when a dog got into the enclosure on Wednesday, spooking Borneo, who quickly leapt over the fence and ran into the forest.

Officials are urging eagle-eyed members of the public to keep a look-out for Borneo.

Barbara Thomson, of the Forestry Commission, said: "Reindeer have an inbred fear of dogs and one was spooked and escaped over the fence and was chased out into the forest. This isn't so much a welfare issue because there will be plenty of food for him."

In the meantime, his companion has been returned to Scotland after getting lonely following Borneo's dashing departure. "It wouldn't be nice to leave one on its own," Ms Thomson said.
