Top Gear presenter James May has hit out at trolls who sent death threats to Sue Perkins on Twitter, telling them the show does not want them as fans.

Perkins quit Twitter after receiving death threats overs false claims that she could be replacing Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear.

May, who presented the show alongside Clarkson and Richard Hammond, voiced his disgust on Twitter.

Perkins announced that she was quitting Twitter temporarily yesterday after receiving death threats about an 'utterly fabricated' story that said she was the bookies favourite to replace Clarkson.

Other names that have been tipped to take over include Life on Mars actor Philip Glennister and model Jodie Kidd.

The BBC announced last month that it would not renew Clarkson's contract after he allegedly punched a Top Gear producer in an argument over food following a day's filming.
