A cycling event has unveiled a new route which organisers claim offers some of the best road cycling terrain in the UK.

The 75-mile Tesco Bank Tour O The Borders route heads west from Peebles and takes in Stobo, Tweedsmuir and St Mary's Loch, and includes what officials described as "absolutely classic riding and amazing landscapes".

The event has also confirmed Tesco Bank as its main new partner, which organisers said would help them offer improvements such as a new timed hill climb section, more road signage and an event village at the start area in Peebles.

Tour O The Borders began in 2012 when 300 riders took part but has grown significantly, with more than 2,000 cyclists expected to take part this year.

Neil Dalgleish, event organiser at Tesco Bank Tour O The Borders, said: "We are aiming to make this the best sportive ride in Scotland and we're delighted that Tesco Bank's support will help us add new elements which will make the ride even more enjoyable for all the riders as for many it's their Tour de France for the day."

The route will be closed to all cars and other traffic on the day of the event on August 9.

Organisers said that it is not a race or an event for just the fittest, and that all kinds of cyclists can take part.

Adele Mills, senior community investment manager at Tesco Bank, added: "We recognise the importance of supporting the communities in which we serve.

"That is why we are proud to partner the Tesco Bank Tour O the Borders, helping them to achieve their aim of becoming the best sportive in Scotland.

"Health and wellbeing is important to all of us and this event encourages riders of all abilities to lead happier, healthier lives by getting out on their bike and seeing some beautiful parts of the Scottish Borders."
