Treasures found at Scott's former home

BUILDERS carrying out a multi-million-pound refurbishment of the former home of Sir Walter Scott have discovered ornate floors and an ancient well.

Workers are restoring Abbotsford in the Borders to convert one wing of the property into five-star accommodation and include new rooms, offices and an education suite.

M&J Ballantyne Ltd, which is carrying out the work, said yesterday it had found the original floors commissioned by Scott under carpets which lay outside his study. The floors, painted in a marble effect, were completed by David Ramsay Hay who also decorated Holyrood Palace for Queen Victoria.
