TRIBUTES have been paid to a young graduate who died suddenly while playing football.

Darren Joliny, 21, collapsed at the Alistair McCoist Sports Centre in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, on Saturday. He was given CPR by paramedics but did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead at Hairmyres Hospital.

Mr Joliny had graduated with a BA Honours in Journalism from Glasgow Caledonian University last year. He was a huge fan of the combat sport mixed martial arts and worked at MMA events organised by On Top Promotions.

His uncle, local MP Michael McCann, said: "Darren was larger than life but that was just a part of his personality. The other part was a young man who was sensitive and cared deeply for others."

Mr Joliny is survived by his mother, Kathleen, 49, father Reza, 50, and sisters Maria, 25, Elena, 16, and 14-year-old Carla.

James Lake, of On Top Promotions, called Darren a "consummate professional when helping us out with interviews and articles".

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of death.
