Tributes have been paid to the Scottish artist and teacher Jack Knox, who died last weekend aged 79.

Born in Kirkintiloch in 1936, Knox studied at Glasgow School of Art and became a noted academic there, being appointed head of painting there in 1981 until his retirement in 1992.

Elected as a member of the RGI in 1980 he also lectured in Drawing and Painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 1965 to 1981.

As a painter he won numerous awards including the RSA - Maude Gemmell Hutchison Prize and exhibited widely with many solo exhibitions.

His work illustrated books including The Scottish Bestiary by George Mackay Brown and La Pontiniere by David and

Hilary Brown.

Jill Gerber, of the Compass Gallery in Glasgow, which held a retrospective of his work last year, said: "We are naturally very saddened, Jack has been one of our main artists since the gallery started in the 1960s, and many of our new graduates came from recommendations from Jack - people like Jenny Saville came under his watch.

"It's a sad loss. Jack really cared about his students.

"Everyone would have something very warm to say about him."

The leading Scottish artist Alison Watt said on Twitter: "My tutor, who never failed to encourage me as a student .

"A great teacher and an even better man."
