TRIBUTES have been paid to a father and his teenage son who were killed on their way home from a classic car show.

Bill Hawkes, 56, and his son Ciaran, 14, who were described as "inseparable" by friends, died in a crash on the A91 near Auchtermuchty, Fife, on Sunday afternoon. They were returning from a car show in St Andrews when the Mazda MX5 they were travelling in collided with a Kia Optima car at around 3.25pm.

In a statement, their family said: "Their deaths are such a tragic loss.

"During their lives, both Bill and Ciaran touched so many people with their kindness, friendliness, thoughtfulness and generosity of spirit. They will be hugely missed by family and friends. "The family is finding it extremely difficult to come to terms with this tragic sudden loss."

Mr Hawkes, a telecoms engineer, was well-known among car enthusiasts and restored classic cars.

The family lived in Denny and on Monday hundreds of Ciaran's fellow pupils from Denny High School were called together to be told the news.

Family friend Gordon Petrie said: "They were very likeable and carved out of the same block. They loved a laugh and were always up for a practical joke."

Friends took to Twitter to pay tributes.

Jennifer Petrie wrote: "RIP Ciaran and Bill, you will be missed."

Another posting said: "Absolutely devastated. Ciaran and Bill were fantastic neighbours and people. Thoughts are with the family and those who knew them."
