THE Prime Minister led tributes to two young police officers gunned down after allegedly coming face-to-face with one of Britain's most wanted men.
Constables Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, had been sent to what appeared to be a routine call about a burglary when it is believed a suspect opened fire with a gun and a grenade in an attack which has shocked the nation.
