RADIO 2 controller Bob Shennan has led tributes to broadcaster Sheila Tracy, who has died aged 80.

Ms Tracy was the first woman to read the news on Radio 4, had been a regular presence on Radio 2 for many years. She had also hosted Radio 2's Big Band Special.

Mr Shennan said: "Sheila was a wonderful broadcaster with an extensive knowledge and love of big band music. She was a voice on Radio 2 for more than 20 years and was much loved by the audience. I'd like to extend my sympathies to her family."

Radio 2's Clare Teal will host a tribute during her Sunday show at 9pm.

Ms Tracy was born in 1934 and trained at the Royal Academy of Music. She first found fame as a trombonist in the duo The Tracy Sisters.
