VETERAN gymnast Beth Tweddle told of her joy at finally winning an Olympic medal last night in her last ever appearance at the Games.

The 27-year-old Liverpudlian took bronze in the uneven bars in front of a jubilant crowd eager to see Britain's most successful gymnast finally take her place on the Olympic podium.

After a small step backwards cruelly robbed her of a podium finish in Beijing four years ago, Tweddle ended her career as the first British female gymnast to win an Olympic medal since 1928.

She said: "It means everything. I just wanted to win a medal, it didn't matter what colour. I always said I didn't care what colour it is. Bronze – I'm made up with it."
