Matt Lucas

The comic, best known for co-creating sketch show Little Britain, was forced to quit Twitter in early 2012, after being tweeted an extremely offensive remark by a 16 year old follower. The tweet related to his late partner Kevin McGee, who hanged himself in 2009. Lucas later rejoined Twitter, but since then has continued to receive abuse.

Caroline Criado-Perez

A journalist and feminist activist, Criado-Perez became a major target for Twitter trolls after campaigning to put Jane Austen on banknotes after it was highlighted that no women were currently featured. The backlash led to her at one point receiving up to 50 threats an hour, affecting her mental and physical health. Having felt helpless to the threats she was receiving, Twitter eventually agreed to instate a one-click report button in order to better aid those receiving abuse such as this.

Helen Skelton

Former Blue Peter presenter had received a lot sexist abuse regarding her time as a presenter at the 2012 Olympics, she signed off of the social media network with a tweet saying: "'Turns out I don't have very thick skin after all so I am closing my twitter account. Enjoy the games. Signing off, skelts x"
