Kevin MacKay, 40, died after the incident at the house in Ecclefechan, Dumfries and Galloway, on Thursday.
Paramedics attended the property on Peacock Place at about 10.15pm but Mr MacKay, from the Castle Acre area of the village, died at the scene.
Door-to-door inquiries were carried out by officers and there was an increased police presence in the village.
Police Scotland said two men, aged 22 and 20, have been arrested in connection with the incident and are expected to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court on Monday.
The death came hours after the funeral of a local teenager.
Detective Chief Inspector Jim Kerr said "I want to thank the community in Ecclefechan for the assistance and cooperation given to police officers investigating this crime.
"As we know the village has experienced a difficult time with the recent two deaths, however they are to be commended for the way they have pulled together and helped us in our enquiries
"Police Scotland will continue enquiries over the coming days and will work with the community over the coming weeks and months to provide reassurance that our focus in Police Scotland is maintained on keeping people safe."
