Two men have been arrested over the death of a man who was attacked at his village home.

Kevin MacKay, 40, was assaulted in Ecclefechan, Dumfries and Galloway, on Thursday.

Paramedics attended Mr MacKay's home in Peacock Place in the Castle Acre area of the village at 10.15pm but he died at the scene.

The death has shocked the community, coming two weeks after local teenager Jamie Abba was found dead in unexplained circumstances in Peacock Place.

His death is thought to be related to fake Ecstasy pills in circulation in Scotland and Northern Ireland that have led to several deaths.

After Mr MacKay's death police carried out door-to-door inquiries and there was an increased police presence in the village.

Police Scotland now say two men aged 22 and 20 have been arrested in connection with the incident and are expected to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court today.

Detective Chief Inspector Jim Kerr said: "I want to thank the community in Ecclefechan for the assistance and cooperation given to police officers investigating this crime.

"As we know the village has experienced a difficult time with the recent two deaths.

"However [local people] are to be commended for the way they have pulled together and helped us in our enquiries

"Police Scotland will continue enquiries over the coming days and will work with the community over the coming weeks and months to provide reassurance that our focus in Police Scotland is maintained on keeping people safe."
