TWO people were injured after nine caravans were overturned in high winds and torrential downpours.
Firefighters from Maybole and Ayr were called to the Ranch Caravan site in Ayrshire at around 12.21pm yesterday following calls from visitors and residents.
Initial reports suggested people were trapped, but fire crews did a full search of the site and everyone was accounted for.
An elderly man and woman were taken by ambulance to Ayr Hospital after suffering cuts, bruises and slight lacerations. However, there were no reports of any major injuries.
Elsewhere, winds of up to 60mph battered exposed parts of the country, while gusts of up to 45mph were witnessed in more central areas.
A woman was rescued from a paddle boat in Loch Lomond after it capsized in the windy weather.
A friend helped her to Inchconnachan island and she was brought ashore by the Loch Lomond ranger service boat.
Police and fire crews reported high winds, but said there had been no other serious incidents.
However, flood and wind alerts were issued for parts of the country as heavy rain continued into the night.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency issued flood alerts for Tayside, Caithness and Sutherland, Skye and Lochaber and Wester Ross.
In Tayside, an alert warned that low agricultural areas were at risk, especially the Glen Lyon district.
Meanwhile, rising rivers in Caithness and Sutherland prompted an alert after heavy showers continued during the day.
In Skye and Lochaber and Wester Ross, there was a risk of localised flooding as rivers were also reported as high.
Traffic Scotland also warned drivers to beware of high winds in the Lothian and Borders and Tayside areas.
However, there were no severe weather warnings issued by the Met Office.
Rachel Vince, a forecaster for Meteogroup, the weather forecasting arm of the Press Association, said blustery showers were expected for the rest of the week.
She said: “It has been a pretty blustery day in Scotland. There is a westerly wind, with the Highlands and the Western Isles getting the worst of the windy weather.
“There were some gusts of up to 60mph in very exposed areas.
“Elsewhere the wind speed was between 35 and 45mph, with an average of between 15 and 25mph”.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
