POLICE have released the names of the two people killed in a car crash on a popular route in the Highlands.

David McCook, 53, from Fort William, and Stephen Lauder, 48, from Spean Bridge, both died when their vehicles collided on the A82 on Saturday morning.

The incident took place at around 11.50am near the Brackletter Junction north of Fort William and the road remained closed for most of Saturday as investigators attended the scene. Cars were diverted along the B8004 Gairlochy to Banavie Road.

Police appealed for witnesses to come forward, particularly those who may have seen a northbound silver Peugeot 307 or southbound grey Renault Laguna at the time of the incident.

A statement said: "At about 11.50am on Saturday, January 4, a two-vehicle road collision occurred on the A82 north of Fort William near to the Brackletter Junction. Fire service, ambulance and police attended.

"Police Scotland can confirm there have been two fatalities. Both drivers died at the scene."

The A82 has witnessed a handful of serious road collisions recently, with a number of people involved in fatal crashes on the road near Fort William.

In October, Banavie man Peter Campbell, 36, was killed when his car slipped down an embankment just south of Spean Bridge.

Two weeks earlier, ­motorcyclist Robert ­Morrison, 48, was killed in a collision near the Glencoe Ski Centre. In July of last year, another motorcyclist was killed in a collision just south of the Corran Ferry Terminal.
