Two men have been injured after a "vicious attack" carried out by three others as they waited for a taxi.
The incident happened on Calton Road in Edinburgh at around 3.30am on Sunday when they were approached by the trio and assaulted.
A 25-year-old man suffered significant injuries to his face while a 24-year-old was left with an injured shoulder.
Both men were taken to the city's Royal Infirmary, with one later transferred to the Western General Hospital.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses and have released descriptions of the three men.
The first suspect is described as white, 26 or 27 years old, 6ft 1-2ins and of medium build. He had a gingery beard, Scottish accent and was wearing thick black-rimmed glasses, a black coat, jeans and trainers.
The second suspect was white, 25 or 26 years old, 5ft 8ins and slim. He had short gingery-brown hair, a Scottish accent and was wearing a white T-shirt, and a red and green tartan coat.
The third suspect was white, in his early twenties, 5ft 11ins, and slim. He had shoulder-length dirty blond hair.
Detective Constable Chris Harding said: "This was a vicious attack which has caused significant distress and injury to two men.
"I would urge anyone who saw the incident or the suspects, or who knows who they are, to contact police immediately."
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
