An elderly woman has died and four others, including a seven-year-old child, have been seriously injured in a car crash.

The collision, between two vehicles travelling in opposite directions to each other, happened yesterday evening on the A77 near Lendalfoot in South Ayrshire.

Police Scotland said a Toyota Prius was travelling north on the road when it collided with a southbound Honda Civic at about 6.20pm.

The 78-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Toyota was taken to Ayr Hospital, where she died a short time later.

The man driving the car, also 78, suffered internal injuries and is in a critical condition at the same hospital.

The seven-year-old girl who was travelling in the other car is said to be in a serious condition at Glasgow's Yorkhill Hospital.

The 47-year-old driver of the Honda and his 48-year-old female passenger were taken to the city's Southern General Hospital, where they are in stable conditions.

Sergeant Ian Pittams, from Ayrshire's divisional road policing unit, would like anyone who witnessed the crash to contact him on 101.

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old man has died after a car carrying five teenagers crashed in the Western Isles on Saturday.

The vehicle crashed in South Uist, at the junction of A865 and B888, at about 8.40pm.

Police said five males in the vehicle were taken to Uist and Barra Hospital but the 19-year-old died of his injuries.

A 16-year-old was treated for a minor head injury and was subsequently transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow for observations and later released.

The others in the vehicle, two aged 16 and one aged 19, were treated for minor injuries.

Officers said a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.
