POLICE have carried out an underwater search for a "vulnerable" pensioner who has gone missing from his home in East Dunbartonshire.

Sixty-six-year-old Stephen Watt was last seen at around 11am on Sunday when he left his home address in Craigenbay Crescent, Lenzie to go to the local shops.

Police Scotland say Mr Watt has never gone missing before, had recently been dealing with some personal issues and his family is "extremely worried" about him.

Officers made door-to-door inquiries in the area in the early hours of Monday morning in sub-zero temperatures in the hope of finding clues to his whereabouts.

An underwater police team have been in the vicinity and it is understood they were searching unsuccessfully in a nearby stream.

Inspector Iain Greene said: "Extensive enquiries are underway but so far all efforts to locate him have proved unsuccessful.

"Stephen is fit and able but he is not adequately dressed for this cold weather and we are increasingly concerned for his welfare. If anyone has seen Stephen or has any knowledge as to his whereabouts please do contact police immediately."

Stephen is white, around 5 ft 10 inches in height, with a medium build, short grey hair, blue eyes and was clean shaven. He was wearing a dark brown fleece jacket and tan coloured trousers. He often walks in the area of Bothlyn Bank Cottage Waterfall.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Kirkintilloch Police Officers on the non emergency number, 101.
