TRIBUTES have been paid to a "warm-hearted" community councillor who was killed when she and her daughter were involved in a horror road smash in Dumfriesshire.

Christina Kelly, 58, known as Tina, and her daughter Kathryn, 29, were walking horses along narrow county road near Clarencefield on Thursday when they were struck by a blue Isuzu pick-up at around 5.10pm.

The pair were rushed to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary but Mrs Kelly, from Ruthwell, near Annan, died shortly after arriving. Her daughter was also badly injured and remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

One of the horses was also killed when the vehicle ploughed into the group. The 53-year-old driver was uninjured.

The incident occurred on the B725 Dumfries to Waterbeck Road, around a mile from Ruthwell, where the mother and daughter had lived for around two years. Mrs Kelly worked for NHS Dumfries and Galloway, and Ms Kelly is a care worker. Both women are members of the local Ruthwell and Clarencefield community council. The close-knit villages have a combined population of just 400.

Vice-chairman Leslie Jardine said "She was very involved in the community. It's been a real shock."
