RAMBLERS have launched yet another attack on the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) after planning permission was granted for the final section of a nature trail.

Perth and Kinross Council approved the completion of Loch Leven Heritage Trail yesterday, but Ramblers Scotland claimed it was not the best route.

The walking group has been locked in a dispute with the RSPB over the location of the trail, which they claim should cut across the reserve instead of circling around the periphery.

Group director Dave Morris welcomed the move to finish the four mile walking/cycling trail, including the construction of a bridge at Loch Leven, but criticised the RSPB over its layout.

He said: "This is an important milestone in the completion of this project, which will provide an outstanding recreational experience for anyone visiting Kinross and the surrounding area.

"However, the route as approved goes around the periphery of the RSPB reserve and is too long, too exposed to bad weather, too steep and too close to the B9097 for much of its length.

"The proposed ramblers' route would be much more direct and would cross the RSPB reserve, giving a much better experience.

"If mitigation measures are put in place, we are not convinced that the levels of disturbance to the wildlife would be as great as suggested by the RSPB."

A spokesman for RSPB Scotland said: "The route provides great views of the loch as well as the wonderful wildlife it supports. The trail will also attract new visitors, bringing economic benefits to the area."
