Warning on sex attacks in military

MORE than 200 allegations of rape and other sex offences against military personnel may be the tip of the iceberg," an MP has warned.

Figures revealed yesterday show 75 allegations of rape and 150 of sexual assault were made by members of the military about colleagues between 2011 and 2013.

Some 25 rape allegations were made to military police in 2013, 24 in 2012 and 26 in 2011. There were 52 allegations of sexual assault in 2013, 42 in 2012 and 55 in 2011. They involved alleged abuse by Ministry of Defence staff against armed forces members or civil servants.

Five servicemen were convicted of rape and 22 of sexual assault. Labour MP Madeleine Moon warned the rate of sex offences within the military may be even higher, adding: "What other sector of society would see this number of rapes between colleagues?"
