Warnings raised over home-alarm charges

ELDERLY residents in Glasgow are to be charged for home alarms, prompting fears many may be put at risk if they refuse to pay the £3-a-week fee.

The community alarm telecare service – which provides reassurance to over-75s – has been free since its introduction a decade ago, but will become a paid-for service from November 5. Opponents warn many users may withdraw from the service as a result, leaving vulnerable people at greater risk of health emergencies.
